In 2026, the Chaleur Regional Hospital Foundation is undertaking an important mission: to raise $400,000 to improve the care we all rely on, right here at home. Every dollar donated stays in our region. Every contribution gives our healthcare teams access to the most advanced tools to provide safer, more compassionate, and more innovative care for each of us, exactly when we need it most.
Your generosity will fund the acquisition of essential equipment and support significant improvements in three key areas of our hospital:
Operating room
Wireless tumor localization
Allows our surgeons to perform less invasive procedures, reducing pain and the risk of complications. This system will also help reduce wait times for patients in our region.
Ambulatory care
Skin grafting system
Offers patients better chances of recovery. This technology uses available skin more efficiently, promoting faster healing and reducing the need for multiple, painful surgical procedures.
Medical imaging
Endocavitary transducers
Enables clearer, more accurate diagnoses while improving patient comfort during specialized exams.
Multiparameter monitor
Supports medical teams with real-time data for faster, better-informed decisions when every second counts.

An endowment fund generates a stable and predictable stream of income for our foundation. It is an integral part of fulfilling our mission, which is to invest primarily in improving healthcare at the Chaleur Regional Hospital. These funds are invested, and only the interest is used to support the Foundation and the facility, now and for future generations.
Thanks to the generosity and trust of many donors, we are able to carry out initiatives that simply would not have been possible without their support.

The Jim and Isabel MacLaggan Endowment Fund: an investment to improve the quality of local healthcare today and for future generations!
My late husband Jim and I have always been proud of our city and the Chaleur region, where we have deep roots. We recognized that the Chaleur Regional Hospital provided essential health services in northern New Brunswick. It is important that people in our region can receive more medical and surgical care locally, so they don't have to travel elsewhere for these services. This endowment fund will allow the Chaleur Regional Hospital Foundation to continue supporting specific projects that meet the needs of today and tomorrow.
Jim and Isabel were married for 51 years, until Mr. MacLaggan passed away from cancer in 2003. They had three children: Don, Nancy, and Heather. Heather also passed away from cancer in 2019. Mrs. MacLaggan has seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and she remains very active in her community.
Jim was born in Blackville, New Brunswick, and served at home and abroad with the Royal Canadian Air Force after finishing high school. Upon his discharge, he continued his education and worked in Halifax, Bathurst, and Peterborough, Ontario. He returned to Bathurst in 1959 to join his father-in-law’s insurance business. Jim retired in 1994 after 35 years in the field. He was an engaged member of community life at the local, provincial, and national levels.
Jim was one of the first recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Medal and was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club. Baseball, hockey, and athletics for all age groups benefited from his commitment to promoting and organizing activities at the local and provincial levels. A local baseball field is even named after him. He received the highest honors from the Royal Canadian Legion, a testament to his dedication and leadership. In recognition of his contribution as a builder, Jim was inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 1986, and two years later into the newly established Bathurst Sports Hall of Fame.
Isabel was born in Ontario in 1930 but moved to Bathurst with her family in 1931, during the Great Depression. She grew up during the Second World War and lived almost her entire life on the same street in Bathurst, though she lived in different houses. Isabel finished high school and pursued a career in teaching. Later, she became a journalist and covered news in the Bathurst region for the Moncton Times and the Saint John Telegraph Journal, a career that spanned twenty years until her retirement in 1983. At 95, she remains active in her parish and community. She regularly visits the hospital and nursing homes, and is an avid golfer and badminton player. Isabel also received the Rotary Paul Harris Fellow distinction in May 2025.
Recently, Isabel chose to financially support several organizations, including the Chaleur Regional Hospital Foundation. She decided to make this endowment gift now so she could see the concrete impact in the community she cherishes so deeply.
The Hayden and Mildred Hatheway Endowment Fund: a true gift that keeps on giving!
Mr. Hatheway was married to his beloved wife, Mildred, for 64 years. Mrs. Hatheway passed away on November 9, 2022. Mr. Hatheway is well aware of the importance of healthcare services in the region and was keen to contribute to the support of the Chaleur Regional Hospital.
Scholarship Funds
Investing in excellence in regional care
Education is a key component in improving the delivery of healthcare. The foundation created a scholarship fund to contribute to the training of students in the healthcare field as well as the professional development of Chaleur Regional Hospital staff.
Professional development
Our staff is the organization's most important resource. The Foundation is proud to support hospital staff in their professional development. This fund aims to encourage skill development, enrich knowledge, and ensure quality expertise within our facility.
For 2025-2026, 12 recipients benefited from this scholarship, allowing them to pursue training and enhance their skills in their respective fields. More than 427 scholarships have been awarded since the scholarship fund was established in 1991.
Post-secondary studies in the healthcare field
The foundation encourages young people to study in the healthcare field and hopes to see them return one day as healthcare professionals in our region.
The student scholarship fund supports students who wish to pursue post-secondary education in the healthcare field.
