Bathurst, November 3rd, 2022 – Nearly forty participants and supporters joined the walk on October 29 in four communities in the northeast of the province, raising over $70,654 for the fight against cancer!
The Walk a Kilometer in my Shoes activity was a success for this 3rd edition, exceeding the initial objective of $61,000. The event is part of the overall objective of the Roses Radiothon, which is $180,000. This money will be used to acquire state-of-the-art equipment and services, particularly for the fight against cancer, for the four hospital foundations in the territory.
Started in 2020, this fundraising activity, Walk 1 km in my Shoes, encourages people to walk 1 km in the shoes of someone who has battled or is battling this illness. The number of participants has almost doubled since the first edition. We would also like to highlight the support of the two major official sponsors of the event, St-Isidore Asphalte and Friends of Healthcare.
“It’s touching to see the empathy of people, because beyond the funds raised, it’s an act of empathy that is made by the walkers and supporters. When you put yourself in the shoes of people with cancer, there is an incredible human connection that emerges. It’s sharing a little of the suffering and stress of the patients, and it’s also feeling the insecurity that is experienced in their daily lives and by people who may have lost a loved one, a parent or a friend. There are always after-effects even when you get through it. For me, it is also to support the cause as a walker and sponsor so that we can also bring hope to those who are struggling,” commented Ronald Losier, the honorary chairman of the activity since its beginning.
By reaching out to their networks to raise funds throughout the month of October, participants are taking advantage of Breast Cancer Awareness Month to raise funds for their one-kilometer walk.
The amounts raised by region are Chaleur $18,232, Caraquet $24,796 Lamèque $12,515 and Tracadie $15,111.
“I would like to extend a special thank you to the participants, donors and supporters who came forward to make this event a success. Without people like you, there would be great gaps to fill. You are making a difference in allowing our hospitals to provide quality health care close to home. Know that through your small gestures as well as your large ones, this brings a positive momentum to the fight against cancer. It is stimulating to be involved in such an enriching experience and I am challenging you again for the fourth edition of the Walk a kilometre in my Shoes in 2023,” concluded Mr. Losier.
