PLANNED GIVING

You can make a difference by leaving a gift to the Chaleur Regional Hospital Foundation in your will while still taking care of the ones you love. Every gift has the potential to make a difference, no matter how large or small.

Every year, the foundation aims to meet the urgent needs of the Chaleur Regional Hospital, to support it in its delivery of care and services. It receives a list of requests that may vary from a few thousand dollars to several hundred thousand dollars. When you make a donation, it goes towards meeting these urgent needs.

The foundation is always concerned about access to quality care and this is reflected in its decisions. Bringing delivery of care and services as close as possible to the population is always very important.

You donation could also have a long-term impact if you choose to contribute to one of our current endowment funds or if you plan to create your own.

The benefit of planned giving is that your income today is not affected but you know that your generosity will have a lasting impact on the future for many people.

JIM AND ISABEL MACLAGGAN ENDOWMENT FUND

… an investment to enhance the quality of local healthcare now and for generations to come!

With deep roots in Bathurst, my late husband Jim and I have always been proud of our city and the Chaleur region. We recognized that Chaleur Regional Hospital was providing valued health services in northern New Brunswick. It is important that people in our area increasingly receive more medical and surgical care locally to avoid travelling elsewhere for services. This endowment will ensure the Chaleur Regional Hospital Foundation continues to invest in special projects that are needed today and in the future.

Jim and Isabel were married for 51 years when Mr. MacLaggan passed away from cancer in 2003. They had three children: Don, Nancy, and Heather. Heather also passed away from cancer in 2019. Mrs. MacLaggan has 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren and is still very active in her community.

Jim was born in Blackville, New Brunswick, and served at home and overseas with the Royal Canadian Air Force after his graduation from high school. Upon discharge, he furthered his education and was employed in Halifax, Bathurst, and Peterborough, Ontario. He returned to Bathurst in 1959 to join the insurance business with his father-in-law. Jim retired in 1994 after 35 years in the industry. He was an outstanding contributor to community life locally, provincially, and nationally.

Jim was one of the first recipients of the Queen’s Jubilee Medal and was made a Paul Harris Fellow through Rotary. Baseball, hockey and track and field at all age levels benefitted from his promotional and organizational involvement at local and provincial levels. One of the local baseball fields bears his name. He was a recipient of the highest awards within the Royal Canadian Legion, indicative of his dedication and leadership. For his contribution as a builder, Jim was inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 1986 and two years later into the newly formed Bathurst Sports Hall of Fame.

Isabel was born in Ontario in 1930 but moved to Bathurst with her family in 1932 during the Great Depression. She grew up during World War II and has lived on the same street in Bathurst, although in different houses, for most of her life. Isabel graduated from high school and had a career in the teaching profession. Later she became a reporter of Bathurst area news for the Moncton Times and the Saint John Telegraph Journal, a tenure embracing 20 years until her retirement in 1983. At 95 years of age, she continues to be involved in her church and community, makes regular visits to the hospital and seniors’ homes, and enjoys golf and badminton on a regular basis. Isabel was also made a recipient of the Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellow Award in May, 2025.

Recently Isabel decided to financially support various organizations including the Chaleur Regional Hospital Foundation. She is making the endowment gift now so she can see its impact within the community she loves so dearly.

THE HAYDEN AND MILDRED HATHEWAY ENDOWMENT FUND’’…

a gift that keeps on giving!

Mr. Hatheway was married to his beloved wife Mildred for 64 happy years but unfortunately, she passed away on November 9, 2022.  Mr. Hatheway is well aware of the importance of healthcare services in the region and wanted to do his share to support the Chaleur Regional Hospital.

An endowment fund generates a stable and predictable revenue stream for our foundation.  It provides continuity on the path to achieving its mission, which is primarily to invest in improving health care at the Chaleur Regional Hospital.
